NATURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WOOD

For many applications, it is important to keep in mind that because wood is a natural element it may shift or 'check' after installation based on its surroundings.

Why Wood Moves:
Trees are made up of many living cells full of moisture and nutrients that make the tree grow. Once the tree is cut, its cells begin to adapt to the moisture content around them by releasing the moisture within the wood. In a natural attempt to reach balance with the wood's surroundings, it will release or absorb moisture as needed. By absorbing moisture the wood cells get larger, and by releasing moisture during the 'drying' process the wood cells become smaller in size. Typically, this is when the wood will 'check' or crack to release the pressure. The natural drying or aging process is dependent on the size of the wood. Even kiln-dried wood will check and have cracks. Because of the natural characteristics of wood, Accent Building Supplies can not warranty or guarantee its products free from checking or cracking. Accent Building Supplies will assure structural integrity with all required products and only those products. Installation instructions are available for all Accent Building Supplies products and should be followed to those exact specifications.
